Outdoor and Waterproof LED Strip Lighting
Waterproof LED strip lights add flexible linear lighting to damp, wet and outdoor environments. Depending on their construction and rating, they can be used for protected patios, decks, railings, steps, landscape details, building outlines, kitchens, bathrooms, vehicles and certain underwater applications.
Water resistance applies to the complete installed system, not only the strip body. Cut ends, cable entries, connectors, controllers and power supplies must all be rated or enclosed appropriately for the installation.
Understanding IP Ratings
- IP20: Dry indoor use with no water protection.
- IP65: Commonly used for splash-resistant or protected outdoor applications; not intended for immersion.
- IP67: Designed for stronger water exposure and temporary immersion under the product’s stated conditions.
- IP68: Intended for continuous submersion only within the manufacturer’s specified depth, time and environmental limits.

How to Choose an Outdoor LED Strip
- Select an IP rating suitable for the actual water exposure.
- Check operating temperature, UV and chemical-resistance information.
- Choose voltage and maximum run length for the project scale.
- Confirm brightness, wattage, strip width and cutting interval.
- Use outdoor-rated power supplies, controllers, cables and junction enclosures where required.
- Plan drainage and avoid spots where water can stay trapped around connections.
12V, 24V and Long-Run Systems
12V strips are widely used in vehicles, boats and shorter outdoor accents. 24V systems are often chosen for architectural runs because they reduce current for a given wattage. Constant-current, 48V and line-voltage products may be used for longer commercial projects. Voltage does not determine waterproofing; always check both electrical and environmental ratings.
Installation and Sealing
Test the complete run before sealing. Cut only at approved marks, use compatible waterproof leads and end caps, and apply the specified sealant where required. Support the strip with clips or a suitable channel rather than relying only on adhesive in changing outdoor temperatures. Keep low-voltage drivers and controllers accessible for service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are IP65 LED strip lights fully waterproof?
IP65 products are generally protected against water jets or splashes under defined test conditions, but they are not intended for immersion. Use an appropriately specified IP67 or IP68 product when the strip may be submerged.
Can outdoor LED strip lights stay outside permanently?
Many can, if the strip and every connection, power supply and controller are rated for the exposure and correctly sealed. Choose an appropriate IP rating, use outdoor-rated accessories and protect feed points from standing water and UV where possible.
Can any waterproof LED strip be used in a pool?
No. Pool installations require products specifically rated for the intended submersion depth, water chemistry, voltage and installation method. Power and control equipment must also meet the applicable safety requirements.
